Scorpio Blinds measuring guide for vertical blinds
Measuring for vertical blinds is simpler than it sounds. Take your time, measure carefully, and check your numbers before you place an order.
This guide applies to standard vertical blinds and rigid vertical blinds.
Standard windows
There are two common ways to fit vertical blinds:
Recess Fitting
The blind sits inside the window recess (the “hole” in the wall around the window).
Measure the full width and full height of the recess. Do not reduce the measurements yourself. Deductions are made later so the blind fits neatly.
Follow these steps:
Use a metal tape measure for accurate results.
Measure the width in three places and the height in three places.
Write down the smallest width and the smallest height.
Do not take off anything yourself. A small amount is normally taken off later (10 millimetres from the width and 15 millimetres from the height) to help the blind fit inside the recess.
Check the depth:
Make sure the recess is deep enough for the headrail and that things like window handles will not get in the way. The depth needed is 75 millimetres.
Exact fitting
The blind sits outside the recess, usually on the wall above it.
Measure the recess width and height, then decide how much you want the blind to overlap the recess. The blind is made to the size you give, with no deductions.
To help block more light:
Aim for an overlap of at least 70 millimetres above the recess.
Aim for an overlap of at least 50 millimetres on each side.
At the bottom, the overlap is up to you, but remember obstacles such as radiators.
If you are replacing an old blind:
If you want the new one the same size, measure the blind you already have, including its fittings, and use those measurements for exact fitting.
Other window types
Part-tiled recesses
In kitchens and bathrooms, tiles inside the recess can make the space narrower. Measure the width between the tiles, as this is often the tightest point.
Do the same if there is anything inside the recess that reduces space, such as a picture rail or skirting board.
Bay windows, half-bays and L-shaped windows
If your window is a bay, half-bay, or L-shaped style, you will usually need a separate measuring guide.
Use an angled bay guide for angled bays and angled half-bays.
Use a square bay guide for square bays and L-shaped windows.

What To Allow For:
Leave 75 mm for the headrail depth. This includes space for the slats to turn. If you have handles or vents that stick out, measure how far they come out and add that on. Call this total measurement A.
What You Need:
Two pieces of A4 or A5 paper or card
Pencil
Metal tape measure
Ruler

Steps:
Mark measurement A on both sheets: Put the two sheets edge to edge and mark both of them at distance A.
Slide the sheets into the corner: On the window sill, slide the two sheets towards each other until the two marks line up at the bay corner.
Mark the sill: Make a pencil mark on the sill where the paper meets the window frame.
Get the widths you need to order: Measure from one pencil mark to the next, as shown in the guide. These are the widths you order.
Measure the drop; Measure from where the top of the blind will sit down to where you want it to finish, usually the window sill. Then take off 15 mm (1.5 cm) so the fabric does not drag. Order all blinds as “exact fitting” so no extra reductions are made.

Measure corner to corner for:
The left side
The front
The right side
Make sure to take the measurements where you plan to fit the brackets
Pick the bracket depth you need, then reduce your sizes to stop the blinds clashing at the corners::
75 mm: standard option, about 25 mm clearance from the fabric to the surface
90 mm: available on request, about 40 mm clearance
110 mm: available on request, about 60 mm clearance
Work out your order widths:
Each side blind: take off one bracket depth
Front blind: take off two bracket depths
Example (using a 90 mm bracket):
Front corner-to-corner: 2100 mm → order 1920 mm (2100 − 180)
Each side corner-to-corner: 650 mm → order 560 mm (650 − 90)
Drop
Measure from the top of where the brackets will go down to the window sill. Then take off 15 mm (1.5 cm) so the fabric does not drag. Order as “exact fitting” so no extra reductions are made.
